Murder By Death’s awesome animated video for “White Noise”

Murder By Death have just revealed the second video off their recently released album, Good Morning, Magpie (04/10, Vagrant).  The video for “White Noise” was created by the Australian animator/design team of MaricorMaricar (Architecture in Helsinki, The Living End) and is based on a treatment by the band’s cellist, Sarah Balliet, and explores the “ominous undercurrent” of the song.

Murder By Death announce April 6 2010 release date for Good Morning, Magpie

(January 19, 2010) – Bloomington, Indiana’s MURDER BY DEATH will release their fifth full-length studio album, Good Morning, Magpie, on April 6, 2010 on Vagrant Records. The quartet self-produced the album which was recorded at Bloomington-based Farm Fresh Studios and the resulting ten tracks were mixed by Trina Shoemaker.

Good Morning, Magpie is some of the darkest and brightest material we have ever written,” commented Adam Turla, MBD’s singer, songwriter and guitarist. “While it’s not a concept album, it embodies the struggle between light and dark that has defined our previous work.”

Turla wrote most of the new material during two weeks he spent alone deep in the woods of Appalachia with just “a tent, a fishing pole, a guitar, and a lot of paper.”

Good Morning, Magpie follows 2008’s Red of Tooth and Claw which was universally acclaimed for it’s cinematic storytelling and as Paste Magazine noted of their performance on record – “every one of them a swirling, unapologetic tours-de-force.” Performing Songwriter declared the album “a more personal, impactful and engaging record than the stellar offerings they’ve released thus far… MBD kick up a storm of dirty, killer American rock” and The Tripwire summed it up by saying, “label it whatever you want, isn’t “great” just great?”

A US tour is being planned and dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Murder By Death is: Adam Turla- vocals, guitars, keys, Sarah Balliet- cello and keys, Matt Armstrong- bass and noises, and Dagan Thogerson- drums and percussion.

Murder By Death begin album #5

MURDER BY DEATH Begin Work On New Album
Follow up to 2008’s Red of Tooth and Claw Due Out Spring 2010

Los Angeles, CA (November 16, 2009) – Bloomington, Indiana quartet MURDER BY DEATH will begin recording their fifth full-length studio album in December at Bloomington-based Farm Fresh Studios. The forthcoming as-yet-untitled disc will be mixed by Trina Shoemaker (who produced 2008’s Red of Tooth and Claw, Vagrant) and is scheduled for release next spring.

Adam Turla, MBD’s singer, songwriter, and guitarist wrote most of the new material during two weeks he spent alone deep in the woods of Appalachia. “With this record, we wanted to write a more versatile and manic album,” said Turla. “We are going for doomier, more beautiful, even a few songs in major keys (rare for us)… the whole kit-and-caboodle.”

Murder By Death recently returned from a national tour as main support for Gaslight Anthem and also released an instrumental soundtrack to accompany the science-fiction book, Finch, by author Jeff VanderMeer. This past summer the band learned that director Quentin Tarantino was a fan when he hand-picked “Comin’ Home” (from Red of Tooth and Claw) for the Inglorious Basterds movie trailer.

Released in March 2008, Red of Tooth and Claw was universally acclaimed for it’s cinematic storytelling and as Paste Magazine noted of their performance on record – “every one of them a swirling, unapologetic tours-de-force.” Performing Songwriter declared the album “a more personal, impactful and engaging record than the stellar offerings they’ve released thus far… MBD kick up a storm of dirty, killer American rock” and The Tripwire summed it up by saying, “label it whatever you want, isn’t “great” just great?”

Murder By Death is: Adam Turla – vocals, guitar, Sarah Balliet – cello, keys, Matt Armstrong – bass, and Dagan Thogerson – drums.

Murder By Death announce headlining tour, new 7" series

MURDER BY DEATH ANNOUNCES HEADLINING FALL TOUR
7” Series Debut

“MBD kick up a storm of dirty, killer American rock” – Performing Songwriter

“…the album triumphs on the sheer energy of the band’s performances – every one of them swirling, unapologetic tours-de-force” – Paste Magazine

(August 25, 2008) – MURDER BY DEATH is pleased to announce their upcoming US fall tour. The Bloomington, Indiana quartet is performing several festival dates leading up to the October 22 start of their 28-date national tour and will also be launching a new 7” series where Murder By Death will be trading covers with other artists.

“Will Whitmore is an old friend of ours and we are really excited to be hitting the road together again,” said Adam Turla, singer, songwriter and guitarist of MBD. “The tour will be in support of a split 7″ we have had in the works for a long time. On Side A of the 7″ is MBD covering a William Elliott Whitmore song and on Side B, Whitmore covers a MBD song. This is a gonna be a great tour.”

A limited pressing will be made of the 7” and it will feature artwork by Drew James (who did the artwork for Who Will Survive). Copies will be available on the tour and a pre-order will begin September 15, only at www.murderbydeath.com.

In other touring news, due to the overwhelming response at last March’s MBD Chicago show, original band member Vincent Edwards will be playing piano at the Nov. 20th Chicago show at the Metro on November 20.

MBD’s fourth album and Vagrant debut, Red of Tooth and Claw (03/08), is rife with lust, betrayal, and classical archetypes of good and evil – as Turla puts it, a “Homer’s Odyssey of revenge, only without the honorable character at the center.”

Murder by Death is: Adam Turla (Vocals, Guitars), Sarah Balliet (Cello, Keys), Dagan Thogerson (Percussion), and Matt Armstrong (Bass).

MURDER BY DEATH ANNOUNCE HEADLINING TOUR

Red Of Tooth And Claw Out March 4th

February 15, 2008 – MURDER BY DEATH today announce the first leg of a national headlining tour that begins in their hometown of Bloomington, IN on March 27th. The quartet hits the road next week opening for Clutch and will be releasing their Vagrant full-length, Red of Tooth and Claw on March 4, 2008.

Red Of Tooth And Claw finds Murder By Death at the height of their powers. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Trina Shoemaker (Queens Of The Stone Age, Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop) at Dark Horse studios in Tennessee, the album captures the drama and nuance of MBD’s sound without compromising a lick of the band’s energy. And as longtime followers of their narrative grit—equal parts Old West drama and Old Testament justice—will be glad to know, MBD’s subject matter also hasn’t softened for album No. 4. Rife with lust, betrayal, and classical archetypes of good and evil, Red Of Tooth And Claw is, as singer/guitarist Adam Turla puts it, a “Homer’s Odyssey of revenge, only without the honorable character at the center.”

MBD’s Fuego! EP was released earlier this week through all digital providers and includes the title track along with a live version of “My Baby Shot Me Down” and an extended version of “Theme (for Ennio Morricone).”

Murder By Death is: Turla, Sarah Balliet (cello, keys), Matt Armstrong (bass), and drummer Dagan Thogerson.

The EP includes the title track along with a live version of “My Baby Shot Me Down” and an extended version of “Theme (for Ennio Morricone).”

Murder By Death rolled out of the gates fully realized in 2000, playing a blend of rocking Americana noir and dramatic post-punk. And with their fourth album and Vagrant debut, Red Of Tooth And Claw, the Bloomington, Indiana, quartet are emerging as cinematic storytellers and players whose jaw-dropping performances on record make you yearn for the chance to experience their energy up close and in person.
