As a bonus, the top 10 voted on submissions will receive an autographed CD of Far’s new album At Night we Live.
Originally from Sacramento, California, Far are considered one of the most influential bands of the late 90’s. Though the band split in 1998, Far released four albums in their time together, including the seminal Water & Solutions and Tin Cans With Strings To You (Epic/Immortal). The band reunited at the end of 2008 for a few one-off shows to test the waters of a possible reunion. Shortly afterward, they were shocked to find that their just-for-fun cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony” had made it onto the airwaves. The excitement from the reaction to the band making music together again planted the seeds for At Night We Live. The band, now scattered throughout California, traded ideas and demos for a few months before getting together at guitarist and producer Shaun Lopez’s own studio in Los Angeles to record. At Night We Live is the band’s first new music in over a decade and has been described by Alternative Press as “….intoxicating and uplifting…a magnificent record that while fresh and exciting, could only be the work of Far.”
Far is Jonah Matranga (vocals, guitar), Shaun Lopez (guitar), John Gutenberger (bass), and Chris Robyn (drums).

New Far Album: At Night We Live
Release Date: May 18, 2010
Los Angeles, CA – (February 10, 2010) – Far announce a May 18 release date for their fifth full-length and Vagrant debut At Night We Live. The album was produced by guitarist Shaun Lopez at his own Airport Studio in Southern California. It’s the band’s first release in over a decade.
“I’ve got ten years of interviews saying this would never happen, that Far would never play together, let alone make a record, so I really have no idea what will happen from here on out,’ comments singer Jonah Matranga. “All I know is that I’m really proud of the record, and I think it stands with anything we’ve made. Really, that’s all I cared about as we were making it.”
“I think every record we had made in the past, there was always some sort of outside pressure,” said Lopez. “Either it was label, or us trying to “make it happen”. This writing and recording process was great, since there wasn’t any of that. The end result is something we are all very proud of.”
“This record has some of our heaviest moments, our prettiest moments, our most epic moments, our weirdest moments — and even with all those twists and turns, I actually think it’s the most cohesive record we’ve ever made,” added Matranga.
Far got their start in Sacramento, California in the early ‘90’s and released four full-length albums before disbanding in 1998, soon after the release of Water & Solutions. That album was considered one of the most influential post-hardcore records ever by Alternative Press and Kerrang! magazines, among others, and remains a touchstone for bands as diverse as blink-182, My Chemical Romance, and Deftones.
Far is: Jonah Matranga – vocals/guitar, Shaun Lopez – guitar, John Gutenberger – bass, Chris Robyn – drummer.

Reunited far Signs With Vagrant
In The Studio Now, New Record Out Early Spring
“Pony” A Hit On Modern Rock Radio
KROQ, Live 105, 91x, KWOD, and many more early supporters
(March 2, 2009) – Vagrant Records is proud to announce that far has signed to the label. The recently reunited quartet is currently wrapping up their fifth full-length release in The Airport studio in Southern California with producer and guitarist Shaun Lopez at the helm and an early spring release date is expected.
“We had no idea all this would happen,” says vocalist Jonah Matranga. “We were just planning on getting to know each other again and playing a few shows, in between everything else we’ve got going on. But now, all of a sudden, the songs are coming, and it feels really good. All we’ve ever promised as people and as a band is that whatever we put out, whenever we come around, we’re gonna mean it.”
Matranga adds, “Vagrant is a label that has been smart, hard-working and great to their bands for years and years now. They know where we come from and what we’ve always been about, which helps a lot. We feel really lucky to be working with them.”
far got their start in Sacramento in the early ‘90’s and released four full-length albums before disbanding in 1998 – soon after the release of Water & Solutions – a release that Alternative Press magazine named as one of the most influential records of 1998.
In October 2008 far announced the original lineup would reunite for a few UK dates. Meanwhile, the band booked two LA-area warm-up dates under the pseudonym Hot Little Pony in order to deflect attention while they got used to playing together again. They even went so far as to create a MySpace page under the fake name and recorded a cover of a longtime favorite song of theirs, Ginuwine’s R&B hit, “Pony,” to offer as a free download. That’s where things got interesting.
“Pony” started getting play on the biggest modern rock radio stations on the west coast – including Live 105 (San Francisco), 91x (San Diego), KROQ (Los Angeles) and KWOD (Sacramento). The band’s management team at X Management mobilized to spread the word on “Pony” and now the track has sold over 23,000 digital copies on iTunes, is downloaded up to 19,000 times a day on P2P networks, and an official national radio campaign began last week.
