The Lemonheads have it covered with Varshons

THE LEMONHEADS Sign To THE END RECORDS

VARSHONS Due Out June 23

Gibby Haynes Produced Collection Features Covers of Songs by Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, G.G. Allin, Wire, July, and More

(March 27, 2009) – THE LEMONHEADS have signed to Brooklyn, NY-based THE END RECORDS and will be releasing their long-awaited covers collection, VARSHONS, on June 23, 2009.

It makes sense that the new album from The Lemonheads sounds like a mix tape slipped to you by a music-obsessed friend anxious to turn you on to something new. In fact, the idea for the band’s new covers record was inspired by Gibby Haynes, ringmaster of the Butthole Surfers, who for years has made mixes for his longtime friend Evan Dando. “Making a good mix is an art, and Gibby has it down,” says Dando. “I thought it would be fun to share these songs with other people like he shared them with me. So I picked the ‘greatest hits’ from his mixes and covered them, along with a few other songs I always wanted to play.”

VARSHONS was produced by Haynes, mixed by ex-Cornershop guru Anthony Saffrey, and features Dando along with Vess Ruhtenburg (bass) and Devon Ashley (drums). The collection is filled with strange bedfellows – from G.G. Allin to Texas troubadour Townes Van Zandt and garage rockers The Green Fuz.  The Lemonheads make each track their own, with help from actress Liv Tyler, singing back up on Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” and Kate Moss, who sings over the dance groove of Arling & Cameron’s “Dirty Robot.” Also featured on lead guitar and backing vocals throughout most of the album is John Perry, on loan from The Only Ones.

VARSHONS unearths a pair of psychedelic treasures with “Yesterlove” – a song recorded in 1969 by the group Sam Gopal featuring future Motorhead bassist Lemmy Kilmister – and “Dandelion Seeds” from July, record collector’s Registered Landmark Band. For “Layin’ Up With Linda,” the band filters Allin’s cold-blooded tale through the swaggering country-honk of The Stones’ “Dead Flowers.”

Filled with obscure nuggets, the tracks on VARSHONS cut a wide swath, jumping from early British psychedelic to Dutch electronica and like all good mix tapes, you never know what is coming next.

VARSHONS Track Listing

HORSE the band – in the studio

HORSE the band Enter The Studio To Begin Recording Desperate Living

(March 27, 2009) – Southern California’s HORSE the band - Nathan Winneke (vocals), David Isen (guitar), Erik Engstrom (keys), and Daniel Pouliot (drums) – have just begun recording for Desperate Living their fourth full-length and first for Vagrant. This week the band took 12 songs into White Buffalo Studios in Los Angeles with producer Noah Shain and plans a mid-summer release for Desperate Living.

“It’s great to work with such an adventurous band that has such a strong vision, it makes my job a pleasure,” said Shain. “We made the decision to eschew more traditional modern metal production, and go more toward a natural open sound to capture the authentic brutality of the band’s live show.”

The band also brought Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu into the studio with them.  “Horse the Band has asked me to try to help them make a dying robot, an exploding keyboard, a dream laugh and a melted, drastic flute of redemption,” said Stewart.  “Lucky for you and for me they have the wit and creativity to turn these things into music.”

HORSE the band’s debut album, R. Borlax was released in 2003 and was followed by The Mechanical Hand in 2005 and A Natural Death in 2007.

So Many Dynamos on tour with Ra Ra Riot, The Loud Wars now out June 9, 2009

So Many Dynamos Dates With Ra Ra Riot

The Loud Wars now out June 9, 2009

“Wars contains dense pop songs driven by complex rhythms, puncture-wound guitars and short-circuited synths.”   – Alternative Press  -“100 Bands You Need To Know”

“… four guys joyfully cranking out music that is spastic but considered, proficient but spontaneous, unabashedly fun and very, very smart. So Many Dynamos could easily get by on musicianship alone, but they seem intent on pushing themselves, finding that perfect balance between dance party communalism and mad scientist experimentation.”  – Matt Lemay

(March 24, 2009) – So Many Dynamos‘  The Loud Wars – their upcoming third full-length  – is now due out on Vagrant Records on June 9, 2009.

So Many Dynamos have been developing their own highly evolved brand of indie rock over the last six years that touches on math rock, dance punk and indie pop. With over 400 shows under their belt, they’ve built up a dedicated following by touring with bands like The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, Ra Ra Riot, and Cursive.

They’ve also wrestled with their share of setbacks along the way, but looking on the bright side… if the band’s gear hadn’t been stolen in Seattle in 2006 they wouldn’t have connected with Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla. Walla not only loaned them guitars to finish their tour but also offered to produce The Loud Wars at his home studio in Portland, Oregon and Tiny Telephone Studio in San Francisco, California.

Walla had been a fan of So Many Dynamos 2006 breakthrough Flashlights and his inventive production on The Loud Wars is full of audio trickery and hidden delights.

So Many Dynamos are filling in for Passion Pit this week on the Ra Ra Riot tour:

3/24 – Bloomington, IN @ Waldron Arts Center
3/25 – Akron, OH @ Musica
3/26 – Ann Arbor, MI @ Blind Pig
3/27 – Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall
3/28 – Syracuse, NY @ Westcott Theatre Water Street

Electric Owls feature in Mountain Xpress

“If the ghost of John Lennon got together with Billy Corgan and Perry Ferrell to make an album in an LSD-fueled space shuttle captained by Rick Rubin, it might sound something like this.”

Check out this great feature on the upcoming Electric Owls debut, Ain’t Too Bright, in the band’s hometown paper – Mountain Xpress!

Reunited far Signs With Vagrant

Reunited far Signs With Vagrant

In The Studio Now, New Record Out Early Spring

“Pony” A Hit On Modern Rock Radio
KROQ, Live 105, 91x, KWOD, and many more early supporters

(March 2, 2009) – Vagrant Records is proud to announce that far has signed to the label. The recently reunited quartet is currently wrapping up their fifth full-length release in The Airport studio in Southern California with producer and guitarist Shaun Lopez at the helm and an early spring release date is expected.

“We had no idea all this would happen,” says vocalist Jonah Matranga. “We were just planning on getting to know each other again and playing a few shows, in between everything else we’ve got going on. But now, all of a sudden, the songs are coming, and it feels really good. All we’ve ever promised as people and as a band is that whatever we put out, whenever we come around, we’re gonna mean it.”

Matranga adds, “Vagrant is a label that has been smart, hard-working and great to their bands for years and years now. They know where we come from and what we’ve always been about, which helps a lot. We feel really lucky to be working with them.”

far got their start in Sacramento in the early ‘90’s and released four full-length albums before disbanding in 1998 – soon after the release of Water & Solutions – a release that Alternative Press magazine named as one of the most influential records of 1998.

In October 2008 far announced the original lineup would reunite for a few UK dates. Meanwhile, the band booked two LA-area warm-up dates under the pseudonym Hot Little Pony in order to deflect attention while they got used to playing together again.  They even went so far as to create a MySpace page under the fake name and recorded a cover of a longtime favorite song of theirs, Ginuwine’s R&B hit, “Pony,” to offer as a free download. That’s where things got interesting.

“Pony” started getting play on the biggest modern rock radio stations on the west coast  – including Live 105 (San Francisco), 91x (San Diego), KROQ (Los Angeles) and KWOD (Sacramento). The band’s management team at X Management mobilized to spread the word on “Pony” and now the track has sold over 23,000 digital copies on iTunes, is downloaded up to 19,000 times a day on P2P networks, and an official national radio campaign began last week.

far is: Jonah Matranga – vocals/guitar, Shaun Lopez – guitar, John Gutenberger – bass, Chris Robyn – drummer.
